Climbing Slings Demystified: What to Use and When to Use It

Not all slings are created equal. Here’s how to choose the right one.

Climbing slings are a staple in every climber’s gear bag—but with so many options, it’s easy to get confused. Should you go for nylon or Dyneema? Is a daisy chain the same as a runner? And what are they actually for?

In this guide, we break down the three most common types of slings and show you when and why to use each one. Whether you're building anchors, extending gear, or organizing your aid rack, we’ve got you covered.

Nylon vs Dyneema: What’s the Difference?

Let’s start with materials. The two main ones you’ll encounter are nylon and Dyneema (aka Dynex).

Nylon Slings (like our 15mm Nylon Sling)

  • Thicker and stretchier than Dyneema
  • Great for building top-rope anchors
  • Absorbs shock better
  • Easier to tie knots with
  • Slightly heavier and bulkier

If you’re setting up top-rope anchors or just want something reliable and burly, nylon is your friend. Our 15mm Nylon Sling is a solid all-rounder that holds up to wear and tear, making it ideal for everyday gym and outdoor climbing.

The Wild Country 15mm Nylon Sling offers rugged durability and shock absorption—perfect for top-rope anchors.

Dyneema Slings: Lightweight and Compact

Dyneema slings are known for being:

  • Incredibly strong for their weight
  • Super thin and low-profile
  • Resistant to water and UV
  • Less stretchy (not ideal for high-impact falls)

These are best used for alpine or trad climbing where every gram counts. Use them to extend placements, reduce rope drag, or sling features on a route.

Check out our 10mm Dyneema Sling, available in 60cm, 120cm, 180cm, and 240cm lengths—it’s a favourite among climbers who need to stay light and fast.

What About Daisy Chains?

Daisy chains look like slings with loops sewn along their length—and they are, but with a specific purpose.

Our 12mm Dynex Daisy Chain is:

  • Made from lightweight, abrasion-resistant Dynex
  • Designed for aid climbing and gear organization
  • Features a half-twist at the bottom loop for clean girth hitching

Important: Daisy chains are not meant to be used as personal anchors unless you know exactly how to load them correctly. The stitching between loops isn’t rated for high loads—so use them for gear racking, aid climbing steps, or organizing your anchor station, but not for catching falls.

Pro Tips for Sling Care

  • Retire your slings if they show fraying, cuts, or glazing
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight for extended periods
  • Avoid exposure to chemicals (like sunscreen or fuel)
  • Wash with mild soap and water if dirty—air dry only
